Misplaced Trust in Institutions of Power
In every civilization, people delegate responsibilities upward, to governments, corporations, or technologies, in the belief that centralization guarantees safety. But this instinct, rooted in the human desire for order and predictability, has bred a kind of mass psychological dependency. We outsource vigilance, morality, and sovereignty to institutions that are structurally incapable, or unwilling, to uphold those duties when it threatens their own self-preservation.
Modern society has internalized the myth that technological sophistication equals resilience. But in reality, technology expands attack surfaces as fast as it extends convenience. Every new layer of abstraction distances the user from control. We no longer know how to secure the systems we depend on; we simply hope the companies behind them do. Meanwhile, government institutions, burdened by bureaucracy and legacy systems, can’t even patch themselves in time, let alone outmaneuver state-sponsored adversaries. Yet we still pretend that national logos and corporate slogans guarantee integrity.
What’s worse is that this trust is not merely passive, it’s willfully maintained, even in the face of recurring evidence of betrayal. From mass surveillance leaks (Snowden), to the use of personal data as a commodity (Cambridge Analytica), the pattern is clear: users are not clients, they are the product. And the state is not your firewall, it is often the one holding the backdoor open in the name of national interest, public safety, or “strategic partnerships.”
The underlying pathology is outsourced moral agency. People assume tech companies will make the right decisions in crisis. They assume the federal government will prioritize citizens over contractors. But both are governed by incentives, not ethics. When Google pulls out of China only after a breach exposes its complicity, that is not resistance, it’s reputational triage. When the NSA, CISA, and DHS are all blindsided by a 9-month Russian infiltration through a commercial software update, that’s not bad luck, it’s structural negligence.
These aren’t isolated incidents. They are canaries in the server farm, warnings that centralized authority, whether corporate or governmental, is not only fragile, but fundamentally misaligned with the protection of the individual. The assumption that someone “up there” will defend the digital commons is not just naïve, it’s fatal.
And so we ask:
Who will protect you when they come through the wire?
Because as the Google Aurora Attack proved, not even the most powerful tech firms will protect you if it conflicts with their political or economic interests. And as the SolarWinds breach revealed, the U.S. federal government, despite all its agencies and acronyms, was caught sleeping while foreign adversaries moved freely inside its most critical systems. These are not accidents. They are the predictable result of a culture that confuses convenience with control, and delegation with defense.
True security won’t come from above. It must be built from the ground up, in architecture, in policy, and in the mind of the individual who understands that sovereignty is not given. It is taken, maintained, and defended, especially in a world where no one else will.
In late 2009, a series of sophisticated cyberattacks were quietly launched against more than 20 major U.S. companies. The campaign, later publicly identified by Google as “Operation Aurora,” targeted firms like Adobe, Juniper Networks, Yahoo, Symantec, and even Dow Chemical. But the centerpiece of the story was Google’s own infrastructure.
Hackers, believed to be operating out of China, exploited a zero-day vulnerability in Internet Explorer to gain access to internal systems. But the most chilling part wasn’t just the breach itself, it was what they went after.
They weren’t merely trying to steal source code or intellectual property. They were targeting Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.
Google discovered that not only had some of its own source code been exfiltrated, code critical to its authentication infrastructure, but that accounts belonging to dissidents were being quietly surveilled, and in some cases, compromised with state-level precision.
This shook Google internally. And in an unusual move for Big Tech, the company made a public disclosure in January 2010. They revealed not just the attack, but the fact that they were reconsidering their operations in China. It was framed as a moral stand.
But what few realized at the time was this: Google had already been quietly cooperating with Chinese censors and government data requests for years. The attack didn’t reveal a moral awakening, it forced Google’s hand. It exposed that the “Don’t Be Evil” company had already compromised its values until it became a liability.
The Aurora attacks showed the public that even the most powerful tech companies:
Can’t or won’t guarantee user safety when nation-states are involved.
Often cooperate with authoritarian regimes until it becomes reputationally expensive.
Only “take a stand” when corporate interests align with moral optics.
If Google hadn’t been attacked, there would have been no transparency, no moral posturing, and no reckoning. Society was never their primary stakeholder, the brand was.
Assuming that Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta, or Amazon will defend users against threats from governments, organized criminals, or their own monetization strategies is delusional. Their security priorities are profit-weighted, not rights-weighted.
The Aurora incident remains one of the most powerful examples that:
Security must be systemic, not dependent on the goodwill of centralized powers.
Whether it’s encryption, identity, or infrastructure, if society wants digital sovereignty, it needs to build its own defenses, not outsource its future to shareholders.

In 2020, cybersecurity firm FireEye discovered something disturbing: their own internal tools had been stolen in what appeared to be an extraordinarily stealthy intrusion. As they dug deeper, the scope of the compromise turned catastrophic.
They had stumbled upon one of the most devastating cyber-espionage campaigns in U.S. history. The breach was ultimately traced back to SolarWinds, a Texas-based IT company whose software, Orion, was used by more than 33,000 public and private organizations, including nearly every critical federal agency.

No centralized detection: There was no federal system in place capable of identifying this attack, despite the NSA, CISA, and DHS having overlapping mandates for critical infrastructure defense.
Supply chain blindness: Agencies blindly trusted a third-party vendor’s software update mechanism. No meaningful zero-trust model existed at the time across federal IT.
Ignored audit warnings: Government oversight agencies had warned for years that agencies were running outdated systems, lacking endpoint detection, and had poor patch management. These warnings were ignored or defunded.
Posture over substance: In the wake of the breach, officials called it an “intelligence gathering” operation, not an “attack”, downplaying the systemic threat. This minimized urgency while adversaries had root-level access.
CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) had just run a PR campaign proclaiming the 2020 election as “the most secure in American history”, while its own systems were quietly breached and observed in real-time by a foreign intelligence service.
The SolarWinds hack demonstrated in brutal clarity that:
The U.S. federal government is not structurally equipped to defend its own digital infrastructure, let alone private citizens.
Even with the NSA, DHS, and CISA, there was no meaningful deterrence, no early warning system, and no systemic resilience. The idea that the government will protect the digital commons is a dangerous illusion, especially when vendors, not voters, control the entry points.

Modern society’s instinct to blame Big Tech, government regulators, or “the cloud” for every data breach reflects a deeper misalignment of trust: we expect centralised actors to secure a sprawling digital ecosystem while individuals remain technologically disempowered. Legislatures answer public outrage with ever-steeper fines, GDPR percentages, OCC consent orders, FTC decrees, yet these regulations audit symptoms, not the root cause. The average citizen still relies on brittle passwords, opaque ad-tech consent boxes, and labyrinthine privacy settings that assume far more technical fluency than most people possess. In effect, we delegate control to institutions that themselves struggle to keep pace, then fault them when the inevitable exploit arrives.
The resulting “compliance theatre” perpetuates entitlement on both sides. Consumers treat free-to-use apps as if they came bundled with bank-grade safeguards; enterprises chase audit check-boxes rather than fundamental risk reduction because passing ISO or SOC 2 feels safer, legally, than questioning whether current architectures are even defensible. This feedback loop masks the real scarcity: accessible, user-centric security technology. Cryptography strong enough to thwart state-level actors already exists, but key-management remains inscrutable to non-experts; homomorphic encryption, self-sovereign identity, and zero-knowledge proofs promise radical privacy gains, yet most remain confined to academic papers and niche pilots.
Breaking the cycle requires a cultural pivot from regulation-centric mind-sets to innovation for the edge user. That means venture capital willing to fund ideas that look unorthodox, cognitive proof protocols, hardware wallets as cheap as flash drives, operating systems that default to compartmentalisation rather than aggregation. It also demands product designers who treat the end-user’s attention span, not just the attacker’s toolset, as a primary threat model. When security defaults to “on,” encryption keys travel embedded in habit-forming interfaces, and breach-impact is explained in human rather than forensic terms, accountability migrates from distant institutions to the device in a person’s hand.
Government still plays a role, but as an enabler of open standards and R&D tax incentives, not merely a source of enforcement headlines. Think DARPA-style grants for privacy-preserving AI, procurement programs that favour truly decentralised architectures, and export-control regimes updated to encourage, not stifle, dual-use security research. Meanwhile, the private sector must move beyond quarterly compliance sprints to multi-year road-maps that price in the strategic upside of creator-level trust: lower churn, premium brand positioning, and reduced long-tail liability.
Ultimately, real cyber-resilience will emerge only when the average person can exercise agency, choosing cryptographic proofs over passwords, verifiable compute over blind trust, without needing a PhD in infosec. Until then, society’s habit of faulting tech giants and regulators is less a moral indictment than a mirror held to our collective inertia. True progress lies not in louder blame but in democratising the tools that make blame unnecessary.
